Move It!

I just talked to a patient who has come up with her new favorite exercise, one I hadn’t thought of: swinging! She had her husband make her a simple swing, hang it from a big tree in their front yard and she spent time all weekend feeling like a little girl again while getting easy, fun exercise.

What’s your simple daily “move” of choice? We all need to find one, whether for weight loss, health maintenance, or just to keep our joints moving freely. Research shows the effect regular mild exercise has on keeping us mobile as we get older.

The longer I’m a doctor, the more adamant I get that I’m going to keep moving very late in life. Watching people slow down and almost stop moving by 70 is terrible – don’t let that be you!

Pick something you can enjoy — even swinging! — then do it as often as possible. Biking, walking, bowling, tennis, swimming, golf – it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you Get Moving!
